Michael Katz
Managing Partner
A formidable force in litigation, Michael Katz’s three decades of experience and strategic acumen have resulted in numerous landmark victories. As a former IP and business litigation partner at Morrison Foerster, Michael’s involvement and leadership in many high stakes cases and trials make him an unparalleled asset to the Firm’s clients. Michael has represented a broad range of clients across many high-tech industries, including semiconductor, software, medical devices, healthcare, and biotech, as well as in traditional manufacturing, energy and agricultural sectors. His corporate clients range from Fortune 100 companies to successful family-run or regional business. He has also represented famous individuals such as Chuck Yeager, and the estates of Marilyn Monroe and the Marx Brothers. While Michael enjoys a reputation for zealously representing his clients in court, many of his repeat clients rely on him to resolve discretely intractable problems to avoid litigation.
Byron Ruby
COO & Partner
With dual expertise in litigation and strategic advising, Byron's practice areas include complex business and intellectual property disputes, securities law, and environmental and constitutional law issues, including First Amendment law and the Anti-SLAPP Act. Byron graduated summa cum laude from U.C. Berkeley. He holds a joint J.D.-Masters from Yale University and Harvard Law School, where he earned multiple Dean Scholar’s awards and graduated with Latin Honors. He served as a law clerk to the Honorable John W. Holcomb, United States District Court for the Central District of California, and externed with the Honorable Jeffrey Meyer, United States District Court for the District of Connecticut. He has also worked for the State Department, the DOJ, legal non-profits, McKinsey & Co., and DLA Piper. He has published legal scholarship on the First and Eleventh Amendments. Byron’s prior experience advising Fortune 500 companies and other AmLaw Global Top 15 law firms gives him a well-honed ability to manage the most complex problems, as well as broad insight into the efficient delivery of legal services.
Nathan Carle
Partner
Nathan began his career in New York at global law firms for nearly a decade before relocating to California. During his career, Nathan has developed a broad ranging business litigation practice. He has achieved out-sized results for both plaintiffs and defendants in trials, arbitrations, and mediations across numerous industries including finance, consumer goods, manufacturing, and real estate development and investment. Since moving to a litigation boutique platform, Nathan has time and again achieved success against larger firms at trial and arbitration, often when representing parties with fewer resources than their adversaries. As such, Nathan is relied upon both as an advocate in the court room in high stakes cases and as a trusted advisor to negotiate and resolve contentious issues in complex business disputes of all kinds. Nathan graduated from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Columbia Law School, where he was twice a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar.
David Sarfati
Counsel
David has extensive legal experience counseling parties when bringing or defending against high stakes "bet the company" litigation. David's areas of practice include business disputes, securities, mass torts, and employment. He has achieved tremendous outcomes for his clients, winning and defending against multimillion-dollar claims. He started his career at Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP in New York and later honed his litigation skills in some of California’s most elite boutique firms, like Hueston Hennigan LLP. Those experiences allow David to provides his clients with top quality legal services without the waste and overhead all too common at major firms. Accordingly, he regularly represents clients against those major organizations and achieves successful results at a fraction of the cost. David earned his J.D. from Columbia Law School where he was named both a James Kent and Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar. He graduated magna cum laude from U.C. Irvine with a degree in Criminology, Law and Society.
Adam Sechooler
Attorney
Adam specializes in complex commercial disputes, intellectual property, and torts. Although known for his extensive experience in state court, he has also submitted appellate briefs to the Ninth Circuit. In addition to his active practice, Adam teaches classes at the U.C. Berkeley School of Law and the U.C. Irvine School of Law, including classes on trade secrets and legal writing and research. Adam began his legal career at the firm of Greenberg Gross and served as law clerk to the Honorable John W. Holcomb, United States District Court for the Central District of California. He graduated with one of the inaugural classes of the U.C. Irvine School of Law and holds a Masters degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Evelyn Escamilla
ASSOCIATE
Evelyn is an associate specializing in intellectual property matters, with a focus on patent litigation. She has a technical background in physics and is licensed to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in all patent-related matters. Evelyn has experience working on cases involving telecommunications and computer networking. Prior to joining the firm, Evelyn worked on trademark brand protection and trademark prosecution. During law school, Evelyn externed for the Honorable John W. Holcomb of the United States District Court for the Central District of California. She also externed for the United States Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California in the Criminal Division. Evelyn earned her J.D. from LMU Loyola Law School and her bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Los Angeles. She was named a 2023 Hispanic National Bar Association IP and Tech Law Institute Scholar.
